MBABANE – It’s free for all.

Mbabane Mayor Zephaniah Nkambule opened the first outdoor gym at the Coronation Park in Mbabane. In attendance at the opening ceremony were the ward Councilors, the elderly, fitness instructors and members of the public. In his remarks, Nkambule urged the public to prioritise their health by adopting the culture of physical exercise. This facility, being the first in the kingdom, he said their wish as Mbabane City Council was to expand such initiatives across the country and make it accessible to people in the vast communities outside the cities. The weather resistant equipment are immovable as they are mounted on the ground and can be used by people of all ages or fitness levels. These include sky walkers, push-up bars, pull-up bars, spin-bikes, self weight rowers, bicep and tricep curlers, back and leg massagers among others.

“Today is an important day in Mbabane as we demonstrate our vision of improving human lives in Africa through exercise and wellness. We are accustomed to indoor training and we are proud to open the first outdoor training facility in the country. Negotiations are in the pipeline to construct recreational facilities starting in places like Pine Valley and Fonteyn,” Nkambule said. Nkambule urged the nation to vaccinate for COVID-19 and shared a testimony of his horrid experience in quarantine at Siteki Referral Hospital after contracting the deadly virus early this year. “Let us get vaccinated because this virus is real and dangerous if you haven’t vaccinated,” he said. Ward Two Councilor Musa Dlamini said the outdoor gym would yield a lot of positive impact as it was easily accessible.

Exposure

He said exercising outdoors provided all the physical benefits of indoor exercise such as blood flow, improved cardiovascular health, improved strength, flexibility, endurance and also provided vital exposure to sunlight that increased  important levels of vitamin D, unlike indoor exercise. “I am an athlete so I love exercise. I play basketball and soccer. Now I can come here even at 5am, exercise and breathe fresh unpolluted air without any problem,” Dlamini said. Meanwhile, fitness trainers thanked the City Council for taking the initiative to encourage and create a healthy nation. “The facility is good. It increases the environment we will work in as fitness trainers. I would advise people using the equipment to read the instructions engraved on the different equipment to avoid injuries. It’s also wise to seek assistance from a coach who will train you in this outdoor area,” Simelane said. The coaches also helped to demonstrate the functions of the equipment.
