‘MADZE’ BRIEFED ON OLYMPICS

MBABANE – The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga, was briefed about the plans of sending a team to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Eswatini Olympics and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) Executive Board met with the Minister on Friday during a courtesy visit. EOCGA announced a seven athletes tentative squad that is currently preparing for the games.The team included athletes in Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, Phumlile Ndzinisa and Andile Lusenga, swimmers Robyn Young and Simanga Dlamini and boxers Thabiso Dlamini and Zweli Dlamini.

EOCGA Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Vice President Maxwell Jele said they briefed the minister on the plans of sending the team safely to Japan under the COVID-19 environment. The Tokyo Olympic Games were initially billed for 2020 but they were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organising committee’s major assignment is the Olympic Games that start on July 23 to August 8 in Japan. Jele said among other things discussed during the meeting was on how they plan to strengthen their relations with the government through the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC). “We want to work hand in hand with ESRC. If all these stakeholders can work together, we can all achieve our goals and see the development of sports in the country,” he said.
