MBABANE – It was a sensational performance by sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa as he clocked a new 200m national record in Lusaka, Zambia.

He set the new national record of 20:47 seconds at National Heroes Stadium, Zambia yesterday midday during the All Comers Meet. The previous record was 20:48 seconds. The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) athlete finished second in the event bringing home the silver medal. Winning the race was Kenya’s Mark Otieno Odhiambo who finished a mini-second ahead of Matsenjwa on a time of 20:46 seconds. With Matsenjwa finishing second, Denmark’s athlete Tazana Kamnga-Dyrbak was third with a time of 20:48 seconds. Matsenjwa could not produce the same performance in 100m as he was tired from the 200m and he finished 6th, hitting 10:52 seconds.

Matsenjwa said he was happy with the performance but the journey just started. He is among the athletes who are preparing for the Tokyo Olympic Games to be held in Japan in July/ August. “I’m happy with my performance and its all through hard work. There are no short cuts the fact that I’m progressing keeps me going,” he said. Matsenjwa thanked the support he got from Athletics Eswatini (AE), Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), reps and his family for the support.
