MBABANE – It’s all confusion.

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) still awaits confirmation of a venue when the national team, Sihlangu, has been in full camp for five days ahead of their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers against Guinea Bissau on March 23. Information gathered by this publication was to the effect that the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) was yet to receive a communiqué from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on the venue and time of the much-awaited international assignment. Insiders have confided that the players underwent medical check-ups on Tuesday at the Lobamba Technical Centre.

A few of the players are reported to have tested positive for COVID-19 although the exact figure could not be immediately ascertained. “It is true that there were few players who tested positive for COVID-19 but since the team resumed full camp on Wednesday, all is going well,” confided our trusted sources. When reached for comment, EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said there was no official squad submitted to his office. He said they would update the nation once the team goes to full camp and said what he was aware of was the fact that players indeed went for medical check-ups ahead of the camp in preparation for the Guinea Bissau AFCON Qualifiers return match.

Completed

“As earlier highlighted that CAF will furnish us with the fixture for the match, a process said to be completed in about two weeks, we are still waiting for that communication but as for now, the venue and time of the game is unknown to us,” he said. Meanwhile, government announced on Friday that they had given the Dominic Kunene-led side special permission to start preparations for this assignment. The national team head coach could not be reached as his mobile phone repeatedly rang unanswered when called yesterday. Kunene’s charges will square up against the ‘African Wild Dogs’ of Guinea Bissau in match five of the qualifiers on March 23 before travelling to Dakar, Senegal for the last group match against the ‘Teranga Lions’ seven days later. Worth noting is that Sihlangu lost the first leg match against Guinea Bissau 0-3 on November 13, 2019 at the Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.
