MBABANE – COVID-19 and the ban of gatherings does not mean one should not maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Emerging boxing star, Chawe Innocent Gamedze, is one of the local athletes’ advocates for leading a healthy lifestyle through individual training as the country is currently on strengthened partial lockdown in the fight to curb the spread of COVID-19.

While boxing tournaments are currently suspended, ‘Ma Inno’ as he is fondly known in the ring, said he has tried to keep a healthy lifestyle, something which he encouraged other athletes to embrace.

“Every week I challenge my body out of its comfort zone, I do different body workouts since working out is part of my lifestyle. I am not letting this pandemic pull me down. I keep fit by doing road-works, blanks, diamond push-ups and the abs wheel challenge,” said the boxer.

He also disclosed that in the absence of the Matsapha Correctional Gymnasium, he continues to practice a healthy lifestyle as he was one of the boxers under the Matsapha Correctional Boxing Stable.

“The Matsapha Correctional Gymnasium and boxing tournaments were last active in March 2020. The sport was suspended among other sports due to the spread of COVID-19,” said the fighter.

‘Ma Inno’ further highlighted that despite government lifting the ban on some low risk sports which excluded the likes of boxing, taekwondo and other combative sports, active athletes should continue taking extra-precaution to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

“Even individual training can make you stay fit and healthy. I’m begging everyone to start training not only the boxers but everyone. Together we can fight this pandemic and then we must not forget to follow the rules and regulations from government and healthy organisations so that everything can go back to the normal life we used to have, in God we trust.”

The athlete added that they were keenly awaiting the green light from the Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) and organisers on the next proposed tournaments to get back to action.
