He joined Royal Leopard at around 2003 and he was assistant to Musa Zwane. He left the official position at the club in 2011 when coach Sifiso ‘Nuro’ Ntibane took over. Kunene’s death came at a time when the football fraternity was still mourning the passing of other coaches and officials especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the recent deaths in football include that of national team, Sihlangu’s Assistant Coach Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini, Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati and former XI Men In Flight Manager Mvila Dlamini, former Mbabane Highlanders administrators in Mvumeni Khumalo, Andrew Mamba and Mario Masuku among others.

“We are still shocked about the sad news. He was still part of the team. Before the season started, we he met the team just to give some words of advice as he was among those highly experienced in the club. He even talked to the players and the technical bench. This is a great loss to us as a team and the nation at large,’ he said.

Kunene was a police officer based at the Police Academy in Matsapha. He worked along with Leopard former Coaches in Musa Zwane, Sifiso ‘Nuro’ Ntibane, Brian Maphanga while the leadership of the club included Khisimusi Ndlovu and the President was the then commissioner Isaac Magagula. “On behalf of the club and the commissioner we send our condolences to the Kunene family and Police Academy where he was based. We believe that God will give comfort to everyone during this sad hour,” he added.
