MBABANE – With just nine days left before the contract of Sihlangu head coach, Dominic Kunene, elapses with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA), the football mother body is now compelled to renew his contract.

Kunene, together with the rest of the national team technical team were given a one year renewable contract last December to lead the nation’s pride after the association and former head coach Kostadin Papic amicably parted ways. Kunene had only been in charge of one official game where Sihlangu lost 0-2 away in Congo Brazzaville during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifier recently.

Termination

According to the Eswatini Employment Act of 1980: 33 (1), the minimum notice of termination of employment an employer may give an employee who has completed his probationary period of employment, and who has been continuously employed by that employer for more than one month, shall be two days for each completed month of continuous employment up to and including the twelfth month if the period of continuous employment is between three months and twelve months. Experts have shared with this publication that if the employer does not give the employee a notice of contract termination in the stipulated period, then the contract is automatically renewed for the same period of the first contract.

In this instance, it therefore means the EFA is legally obliged to renew Kunene and his team’s contract for another year, meaning they will be with the national team until December 2021.
The former Young Buffaloes tactician was drawn for comment on the matter and confirmed that he has not been engaged yet by the EFA on renewal terms of his contract. “They have not yet called pertaining renewal of my contract. I cannot say they will extend it or not as they have not yet called me,” said Kunene briefly.

Meanwhile, the EFA Marketing and Communications Officer, Muzi Radebe, said the issue of a coach’s contract can never be disclosed as it was confidential. “The issue of a coach’s contract is administrative, it is between the employer and the employee and nothing can be disclosed to the public,” said Radebe. EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu could not be immediately reached as his mobile phone kept ringing without an answer despite several attempts.
