MBABANE – His future with the squad is uncertain.

Sihlangu head-coach Dominic Kunene’s contract with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) is coming to an end on December 31, 2020, after leading the squad in only two official international games.

This was recently during the squad’s 2022 AFCON two-legged Qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville. The locals lost 0-2 on aggregate to the Central African country to effectively end hopes of qualifying for the continental football showpiece to be hosted in Cameroon. Kunene was appointed together with Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini, Anthony Mdluli and Mbuso Gina to form part of the technical bench after they reportedly signed a one-year contracts.

It is now expected that the EFA executive committee led by Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa will meet soon to decide on whether or not Kunene’s contract is renewed.

An impeccable EFA source, revealed that chances of Kunene’s contract being renewed were very high as two games are viewed as insufficient to judge him.

“Logic dictates that the contracts of the Sihlangu coaches must be renewed given that they have only been in charge in two official games. You cannot judge a coach in two games as that would be grossly unfair. It is likely that the EFA executive committee will extend their contracts to allow them to lead the squad in the remaining AFCON Qualifying matches along with the COSAFA Cup,” our EFA source said.

The source added that Kunene’s technical report on his assessment of the squad will ultimately decide his fate.

EFA’s Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe could only confirm that Kunene and his colleagues are expected to submit their report to the EFA anytime. The report is based on their assessment of the squad’s performance in the past two games against Congo Brazzaville.

The squad’s next game in the competition is a home encounter against Guinea-Bissau billed for March next year possibly at the now refurbished Somhlolo National Stadium.

“The report from the Sihlangu technical bench is not just about the past two international matches, but would also to provide a way forward, which includes preparations for the next games. We should probably know when the national team preparations are likely to start after that report has submitted and discussed by my superiors,” Radebe explained. The good news for Kunene is that by the time the squad start preparations for the game in March, local premier league games would have started, which would help them to maintain acceptable match fitness for the national team players.

No immediate comment could be obtained from Kunene as his cellphone rang unanswered at the time of compiling this report yesterday.
