MBABANE – Talk of getting the ball rolling.

This holds true for the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) executive committee led by Mark Carmichael, which was appointed into office only about two months ago.

Just as the Denver Sundowns boss had highlighted in his first interview that review of operating policies would be one of the first major assignments upon assuming office, work has already started.

The executive committee, alongside Board of Governors (BoGs), convened a special general meeting at the Happy Valley Hotel which started yesterday and finishes today. Among the agenda items, there were deliberations on all policies.

deliberation of policies

Informed sources at the meeting confided in this publication that on deliberation of policies, governors repealed the 10 per cent commission to which members of the executive were entitled to for securing sponsorships. According to the impeccable sources who were part of the meeting, the executive committee welcomed this change with open hands.

The 10 per cent commission that hogged media headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, was initially structured such that if the PLE chairman acquired a new sponsorship, he was to get 10 per cent of the money as a token of appreciation. According to reports, this had to be a once-off payment but it transpired that executive members would allegedly get 10 per cent from all the current sponsorships every season.

This is said to have not gone down well with the BoGs hence the decision to revoke the 10 per cent commission.

“We have done away with the 10 per cent commission. This was during deliberations on policies and we view the 10 per cent commission as robbery,” said our trusted source.

Carmichael was drawn for comment on the issue and he confirmed the latest developments. However, the former Midas Mbabane City striker said it was the executive committee that has elected to suspend this.

“It is the executive committee that has elected to suspend this until a policy has been developed and implemented to guide and regulate this component,” said the chairman. He added that this will be done in accordance with international standards.

Meanwhile, the PLE special general meeting will end today when the media will be briefed on decisions taken at the gathering.

According to the meeting memo issued by PLE Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati, the agenda comprises the chairman’s remarks, PLE reports, policies, constitution amendments, league resumption and strategic planning.
