KHUMBUZILE HOOKED ON FIT LIFESTYLE

MBABANE – Fitness is a drug. Karl Marks defined religion as the opium of the people.

Billions of spiritual believers use religion to forget their mysteries and hope for a better life in heaven.

It is this belief (religion) that possesses their inner being and gives them level of peace despite all the challenges they face in life. Fitness and religion share this one significant similarity, they are both highly addictive in a positive way. Drug addicts lose control of their lives because the strong desire of opium leaves them restless and yearning for the next fix. That is exactly what happens when you exercise regularly. This kind of lifestyle defines a person’s life. Out of all the drugs that people sell in street corners and destroy people’s lives in the process, 29-year-old Khumbuzile Dlamini from Mbabane chose fitness as a drug of choice.

Her obsession to maintain a fit but toned figure landed her in the rightful hands of fitness coach Arnaldo Barbosa of the Transformers Blast and Burn Studio. One year down the line, she confessed to being hooked on the fitness lifestyle and that means it is never a normal day without dedicating at least one hour to a heated gym session. It has always been said that the body can achieve anything but it is the mind that needs to be convinced.  Join us as we celebrate her fitness and health transformation journey and this could be the kick start you need to chase your own body goals. Let’s hear what she had to say...

Name: Khumbuzile Dlamini (29 years old)

When did you start training and what was the motivation behind?

I started training in January 2019, what motivated me was the desire I always had to be in good shape, to take better care of my body, to love and nurture it. I did want to lose weight too but over time I fell in love with fitness because of the overall impact it has on my body, beyond the number on the scale.

What was your heaviest weight before the beginning of your weight loss and fitness journey?

I honestly do not track my weight anymore. The scale can also be discouraging when you don’t see the numbers you want to see so I let go of it. When I started I weighed between 75 and 78 kilogrammes.  The last time I checked my weight which was four months ago, I was down to 68kg.

What challenges did you have face and how did you manage to overcome them?

The challenges have been staying consistent during periods in my life where my work demands focus and overcoming laziness as well. There are times when my alarm goes off and I want to sleep so badly but I remind myself the benefits of working out and I get up and go. When it comes to training I tell myself to JUST DO IT, it’s about one and a half hours of my day. I would rather spend this time at the gym because I can  account for it instead of time in my day that was lost doing something that does not grow me in any way.

How can you define your training routine?

I train four to five times a week. It is a combination of crossfit, cardio and resistance training. Honestly, Barbosa is my trainer and has been since the beginning of my fitness journey. He plans all my sessions.

What are your fitness and weight goals given a specific time frame?

I do not have weight goals. That is something I let go of because fitness for me is a lifestyle. I want to do this even at the age of 70 so it is about more than the number to me. So my goal is to continue to push my body to get stronger and keep doing this no matter what.

What nutritional changes have you made since you chose to live a fit and healthy lifestyle?

I focus on ensuring that what I eat provides nourishment for my body so I focus more on fruits, vegetables, whole grains (brown rice, quinoa etc) and plenty of water. I actually love water. I have greatly reduced the amount of non-nutritious foods from my day-to-day eating.

What is your personal slogan that makes you stay faithful to the course?

My motivational slogan is JUST DO IT. Clearly I am a huge Nike fan.
