MBABANE - Last Friday’s heat was not enough to dampen Grant Litster from displaying a superb performance to win the United General Insurance (UGIs) Leg of Lamb played at the Royal Swazi Golf Course.

Litster, the former Director Business Segment at FNB Botswana, recently arrived in the country to join Nedbank Eswatini. He has a 13.6 handicap and is currently affiliated with the Durban Country Club. He previously worked for FNB Eswatini and is one of the founding committee members of the Swaziland Nomads Golf Club where he served as the first captain.

For the first time after a very long period the country experienced excessively hot weather conditions last Friday, which rendered golf unplayable for some players. It came as no surprise when only 17 players registered for the competition. This was much against the well-documented tradition of having not less than 30 players participating in the UGI tournament every Friday.

Against all odds, particularly the temperatures that shot outside the historical averages for Eswatini and accompanied by high humidity, Litster was exceptional as he romped to victory with a cool 19 points.

Hot

Notably is that due to the hot weather even the winning score was somehow below what is usually recorded every Friday. The highest score thus far has been 24 points and the average is 20.

Litster was only a point ahead of Dr Zibuse Dlamini. The latter is a consistent top performer in the UGI competition and scooped the second spot on a countback ahead of Rob Cloete. Placed fourth with 17 points was Vusi ‘Futis’ Dlamini, who won the same competition the previous Friday with an excellent 21 points.  The fifth prize went to Nicholas McLeod with 16 points.
