MBABANE – Can the national senior women’s team break records at the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championships?

Sitsebe awaits their first qualification for the knockout stages as they have never made it to the group stage since the inception of the tournament in 2002.

They are in the group of death featuring hosts and defending champions South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, Angola and Comoros, where they open their campaign with the latter.

Sitsebe is without Coach Dumisani ‘DU’ Makhanya and assistant Fisiwe Hlophe will hold the reins for the first time in such a big stage, but with the experience she has as a coach and player, she may spring a surprise this year with her team.

training

The players will have to give their all as they have been in active football and training for only a month after about seven months under lockdown. They started training and camp at the beginning of October and left for Port Elizabeth, South Africa on Saturday.

The team led by Anthony Mdluli last year missed qualifying for the semi-finals by a whisker as they won two of their three games, but still narrowly missed out on qualifying for the last four. A 3-1 victory over Mozambique was followed by a thumping 4-0 success over Angola. But they came unstuck against Zimbabwe, going down 7-0 in their final pool match to bow out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Comoros Island are worse ranked than Sitsebe as they stand at 156 in the FIFA rankings and 30 in CAF while Sitsebe is 151 in FIFA rankings and 28 in CAF rankings.

Comoros Island will be making their second appearance in the tournament having debuted last year and they were embarrassed by a 17-0 thumbing by South Africa’s Banyana Banyana. That was a record score in the competition.

Sitsebe will have to take all their chances as they will be playing the favourite team to win the tournament, Banyana Banyana, on Friday in their second encounter. Banyana Banyana opens their campaign this afternoon against Angola at 3:30pm.
