COLOURFUL FINAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
MALKERNS – Colourful, rejuvenating and informative.
These adjectives best describe the final breast cancer awareness campaign and Pilates training session plus picnic, which was celebrated by fitness lovers who merged at Malandela’s Lodge on Saturday morning. Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Pilates moves tend to target the core, although the exercises work other areas of the body.
The event was organised by Eswatini’s Mrs Africa 2021 finalist, bodybuilder and fitness coach Zama Potgieter of Studio-Z ladies’ only gym. October is world breast cancer awareness month and the goal is to show support to people infected and affected by breast cancer globally. In support of the campaign, Clover Company, Dixie’s International and DL International companies donated refreshments and goodie bags for the attendees. The Pilate session was choreographed by Carla Jele, who is also a member of Studio-Z Gym. The attendees were privileged to learn more about cancer from a health expert Doctor Xoli Mabuza and a cancer survivor Kwazi Jones, who shared her testimony and experience of how she survived breast cancer.
Dying
“Our society is dying because of cancer. Early detection can save more lives and the more we spread awareness, the better it is. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer, I was able to live a meaningful life and I am cancer free today because of all the support I have been getting from people all around,” said Jones. Doctor Mabuza disclosed that breast and cervical cancer were the leading types of cancers especially in the southern region. She encouraged self-breast examination to detect any abnormal lumps in the breasts.
“It’s been a pleasure sitting around with a group of women, having discussions and answering questions. Prevention is better than cure so we advise both men and women to screen for breast cancer and cervical cancer. If you have under lying conditions or living with HIV visit any health clinic for testing and pep smear,” said Mabuza.
