MBABANE – They mean business. Denver Sundowns are in negotiations to enlist the services of highly experienced former South Africa’s Orlando Pirates’ star striker, Thulasizwe Mbuyane, to beef up their technical bench.

Reliable information sourced by this publication has revealed that talks with the former goal-poacher are at advanced stages and could be concluded very soon.

Our impeccable sources confided that the deal would have been finalised by now between the two parties if it was not for the strict travelling restrictions in light of COVID-19.

Mbuyane was one of the most highly rated strikers at the Soweto giants and his goal-scoring prowess won him a lot of admirers even outside the borders of South Africa. His imminent move to Sundowns will mark a new era in his career as he continues to expand his coaching knowledge.

Sundowns’ boss Mark Carmichael confirmed their talks with the former ‘Buccaneers’ star and hinted that if all goes well, Mbuyane will be in the country to finalise the deal.

“Yes, I can confirm that there is a proposal regarding Mbuyane, but the challenge has been to meet him in person and finalise everything because he could not travel due to the COVID-19 restrictions. He is definitely the one that we are looking at and as soon as we finalise our talks, we are hopeful he will be part of us,” Carmichael, a former striker of note himself, said.

The respected businessman further mentioned that Mbuyane was more interested in developing future players for the team.

“His passion is in development and we are basically singing the same tune because this is also my main area of interest in football. My objective has been to put more emphasis on development and having an experienced football person like Mbuyane would obviously assist a lot in that regard. We will give an update as soon as negotiations with him are concluded,” Carmichael, one of the nominees for the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chairmanship, stated.

Mbuyane (born 13 August 1983 in Mamelodi, South Africa) is a retired South African football midfielder who played for Premier Soccer League clubs Free State Stars, Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

He also has one cap with Bafana Bafana after coming on as a substitute in a game against Zimbabwe, which the South Africans won 2-0.

Mbuyane was traded to Orlando Pirates from Free State Stars in a swap deal taking Paulos Masehe in the opposite direction during the closed season before the 2008/09 Premier Soccer League season.

On January 21, 2014, it was announced that Mbuyane has joined Mpumalanga Black Aces on a two-and-a-half-year deal, ending a six-season stint at Pirates.

Interviewed last night, Mbuyane confirmed the Denver Sundowns move.

“My representative has striked a deal with Denver Sundowns. I will only be able to have more details once I come over in Eswatini to finalise everything,” Mbuyane said briefly.
