MBABANE – The 2020 Athletics Eswatini (AE) Senior Track and Field Championships are a validation of athletes who will represent the country in the Olympic Games and other international events in 2021.

The eagerly awaited championships are billed for Mavuso Sports Centre on October 31, 2020 and they will be preceded by two build up competitions billed for October 3 and 17 at the same venue. AE President Zakhele Dlamini announced yesterday.

“AE is pleased to confirm the 2020 senior track and field national championships. The association has felt it necessary to come out and speak about this event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic after government allowed us to resume action,” he added.
Dlamini said athletes had been out of action since February when sports were suspended in the country and internationally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the championships would help in gauging athletes’ fitness.

“The association has felt it necessary to have this event as the nation might already be aware that Olympic Games have been confirmed to go ahead in 2021 and therefore the national championships are necessary for both preparations and validation of athletes which will represent the country in the games and other international events in 2021,” he said.

Athletes will only compete in sprints events being the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m while field events will include discuss, shot put, high jump and javelin.
“Athletes will be required to attend at least one of the build-up events in order to qualify for the national championships,” he said.
