LUYENYO – It was an emotional send-off for former Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Mazibuko .

as relatives had to observe from afar his burial proceedings to keep safe from contracting COVID-19.

The former sports administrator passed away last Wednesday due to COVID-19 while admitted at the Mbabane Clinic.

Prayer

He was laid to rest at his parental home yesterday morning at Luyengo following a short prayer at around 6am.

Given that Mazibuko died due to COVID-19, his corpse was fetched from the mortuary and delivered at the burial site.

Only the family, friends and mourners attended the short morning service at home and Mazibuko’s portrait was pinned to the wall.

Police and health inspectors had to ensure all COVID-19 safety measures were followed as they arrived just before the start of the morning service.

During the service, Reverend Samketi Dlamini, who was leading proceedings, would now and again advise mourners to observe all COVID-19 guidelines as per the instruction of government.

He said they had a preparatory meeting with the police who advised them to ensure that people kept the required one to two metres distance, wore masks all the time and were sanitised regularly.

The man of the cloth said by disregarding the COVID-19 guidelines, pastors could be charged with attempted murder.

The deceased’s children and close relatives could only observe proceedings from afar as per the directive of authorities.

At the burial site, mourners were kept out of the cemetery boundaries and could only follow proceedings from a distance.

Only close relatives were allowed to enter the graveyard but were also stationed at a distance. Strict prevention measures were followed as the undertaker personnel had all the protective personal equipment (PPE).

Sanitize

They were clad in all-white protective gear, carried sanitisers with them to sanitise Mazibuko’s casket before it was lowered from their vehicle for burial.

Relatives whohandled the the casket were provided with gloves and the casket was regularly sanitised before and after it had been lowered into the grave.

All the protective measures made the funeral even more emotional as relatives could only observe at a distance. No obituaries were distributed to mourners.
