LOBAMBA – Derrick Namanya reigned supreme.

The Zimbabwe-born tennis player triumphed over another gifted tennis player, Bruce Gama, here yesterday. This was during the finals of the Acers first series singles category, where Namanya pulled a convincing 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win against the Acers Sports Academy captain. The winner had started on a low, losing the first set 5-7 on Sunday where the game had to be put on hold and finished yesterday due to the fact that it became too late to complete the games.

Paired

After the singles final, it was another exciting showdown for the doubles category finals, where the duo of Santa Sorokhaibam and Sibusiso Dlamini took on Thulani Gina paired with Bruce Gama. The latter were the victors and won the doubles final 2-6, 6-3, 10-6, which carried the grand prize of E1 700 plus small trophies. Meanwhile, Namanya on the other hand, had received the grand prize of E4 000 plus a big trophy for winning the singles category, which was the main match of the day. After the big win, Namanya said it was exciting to win such a tournament which pulled a significant number of spectators.

Executing

“I was executing what I had been practising and I knew that I needed to be consistent,” said the player. He added that he had to fix the errors that were his let down in the first set and maximise on shots Gama gave to him. “It is a great tournament which a number of people came to support. Such tournaments are good for Eswatini to improve the level of play,” he said.
The trick for Namanya, he said, was propelling his mind to positivity and ignored psychological games played by the opponent. Meanwhile, Gama said he was very disappointed over the loss and vowed he wanted revenge should they meet again in next month second series. Gama blamed it on lack of fitness and said he had much work to do in training.
