MBABANE – Revealed. The alliance between Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers is not holy after all.

This newspaper can reveal that the two soccer giants have flouted the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) constitution. This comes after Highlanders Managing Director Ally Kgomongwe announced officially that he was assisting Wanderers in securing a director and would also assist them financially in paying players’ salaries and making new signings. He said this would be happening while negotiations with the prospective candidates for directorship were ongoing.

Kgomongwe announced in a joint press conference on Tuesday that after he received a request from Wanderers, asking him to secure them a director, he already had two potential candidates to choose from but due to the COVID-19 travelling regulations, they could not come to finalise the takeover in the country.

clause

The PLE constitution makes it clear in Article 21 under the clause of membership, sub section 10, 1, 2, 3 and 4, that: “no director, official or player of a club may either directly or indirectly hold or deal in the shares of another club, be a member of another club, be involved in any capacity in the management, administration or coaching of another club and act as agent.’’

aware

Mbabane Highlanders senior official Benson Dlamini said they were not aware that they were acting against the constitution.
“I doubt there is something wrong with what we are doing as our aim is to help Manzini Wanderers, especially after they requested assistance from our director. We are doing this for the country and it will be unfortunate if we are against the law,” he said.

Dlamini added that it was expensive to run a football club in the country, which resulted in the cause of trying to secure financial assistance from people outside the country. He said it was not easy for Kgomongwe to watch Wanderers struggle financially while he could assist them.
“He is not taking over as a director at Manzini Wanderers because he belongs to Highlanders. We are aware that the constitution does not allow him to be a Director of two teams. There are people he approached and I believe he was not acting as an agent as there is no financial gain in this,” Dlamini further said.

flouted

Wanderers Management Committee (MC) Chairman Bongani ‘Bhanyaza’ Mdluli said there is no where they flouted the constitutions and they will wait for an official correspondence if there were concerns.

“We are aware of the articles on the constitution and I believe we acted correctly as there is no where we flouted it,” he said.
It is not mentioned in the constitution what the penalty for contravening any of the articles is.

PLE Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati said the constitution was clear on such matters and they were yet to meet for a way forward.
