MBABANE – They are not taking any chances but ensuring the safety and health of their clients.

It is a standard procedure that anyone who sets foot at the door gets their hands sanitised and they are screened for COVID-19.
All staff members and clients’ temperature readings are then recorded in a file alongside their contacts’ numbers.

That was the norm at the Manzini Fitness Zone Gym and the Active Matrix branch also situated at the Hub.
This was on day two of gyms reopening and it appeared that a lot of people were eager to get their fitness back after four months of gym closure.
The Fitness Zone Gym has taken a further step in maintaining social distancing in their workstation as they decided to stick to a 2.5metre distance between machines and in the aerobics area.

Eliminating

According to gym manager Mavis Hein, this was aimed at eliminating chances of infection that could result from sweat droplets from one person to another.
She also disclosed that they removed some of the machines and spinning bikes in compliance with the social distancing rule.

“We gathered all staff members from all our branches and educated them on how to keep the place clean at all times before we opened on Monday. They were taught on how to safely engage with clients without exposing themselves to any form of health risk. The health of the staff guarantees that of our clients,” said Hein.

With hand sanitisers placed next to all training equipment, Hein said they encouraged their clients to also wipe down the machines before and after use.
She added that the gym attendance was low but hoped to see more people returning to the gym towards month end. Nomcebo Simelane, said she had adjusted to the new normal of social distancing and hygiene practice.

“We haven’t seen our clients in months but due to COVID-19, we cannot hug each other no matter how excited we are to see each other after so long. We were taught to be cautious of our conduct outside the gym to avoid infecting our clients,” said Simelane.
Businessman Alam Mohammed said that the reopening of the gym was something special for him.

Priority

He said that he gave priority to his fitness lifestyle as compared to his business.
“For me to enjoy the profits of my business, i need to be healthy and fit so I prioritise exercising more than my business,” said Mohammed.
Manzini Active Matrix gym Director Skhumbuzo Mohammed said they applied similar health precautions in all of their branches.

“We use Phahlaphahla, a professional cleaning company in our gyms. We want people to feel safe in our facilities so health is our main priority,” said Skhumbuzo.
