MBABANE – Local gyms are at the top of their game in terms of ensuring the safety and health of their clients.
This was witnessed on the first day of gyms’ reopening after four months of inactivity.

This reporter visited three wellness centres in the capital city, these being the Active Matrix Gym at the Swazi Plaza, Transformers Blast and Bun Studio at Sidwashini and Mbabane Club Gym at Albert Milling.
As per the health and safety guidelines guiding against the spread of COVID-19, these gyms proved to be in absolute compliance with the regulations put in place by government.

As standard procedure, people entering the gyms were sanitised by the receptionist, who also screened and recorded their body temperature.
Unanimously, there were notices on the walls that warned against sharing personal equipment like water bottles and towels.
Active Matrix Gym Manager Kenneth Hlophe affirmed that hygiene had always been a priority for them even before the emergence of COVID-19.
He thanked government for allowing them back into business and swore to enforce the health precautions.

happy

“We are happy to be back. Gym is about health and the health of our clients is our main priority. Our cleaning is done by a professional company, Phahlaphahla and we encourage our clients to clean every machine before and after use. For extra caution, our staff is responsible for disinfecting all equipment throughout the day,” said Hlophe.

He disclosed that the machines had been rearranged to allow two metres distance in-between and the aerobics stations’ floors were marked two metres apart using tape. This, he said, was meant to ensure social distancing during training. Transformers Blast and Burn Studio’s fitness instructor Nathi Dlamini said that the turnout was low and hoped that more people would return in due course.

“We opened at 5am and less than 10 people showed up. It’s a fact that some people are still sceptical about the safety of the gyms in light of COVID-19.
“We are doing our best to make sure that people are safe and healthy,” said Dlamini.
Fitness fanatic Yusuf Jussub Kamissa expressed his jubilance upon the reopening of gyms.
He said that he was practising extra caution by carrying two towels and a sanitiser to the gym.

training

“Home training alone was not enough for me and I would sometimes skip my sessions. I am happy to be back in the gym and I can stay motivated, fit and healthy again,” said Kamissa.
Mbabane Club gym instructor Bongani ‘The Tiger’ Mthupha advised people to avoid going to the gym if they feel sick or have flu symptoms.

“For the safety of everyone who uses our facility, sickly people are advised to seek medical attention because it’s a known fact one can be infected with the virus but not show symptoms, let us protect each other and exercise regularly,” said Mthupha.
