NKOMANZI – A man was arrested after he was allegedly found in possession of an unlicensed firearm during the late Charles ‘Mashesha’ Nhlengethwa’s funeral.

He was arrested by Pigg’s Peak Police, who were present during the funeral yesterday at Nhlengethwa’s homestead at Nkomanzi. The police saw the gun after a scuffle ensued about 100 metres from the grave site. Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Nosipho Mnguni confirmed the arrest yesterday and said police were investigating. He said the suspect was expected to appear before a magistrate tomorrow.

There were over 100 people who attended the funeral of the Pigg’s Peak businessman and some had to watch the proceedings about 200 metres away.  Meanwhile, the Nhlengethwa family made sure that all those attending the funeral were wearing face masks, sanitised when entering the homestead or leaving and social distancing was observed even though some people still found it hard to follow. The funeral started at 6am upon the arrival of the hearse with the body, as there was no night vigil with majority of people arriving in the morning. This reporter was barred by some family members from taking pictures during the funeral proceedings.
