MBABANE – Local football has another playing pitch available for top flight matches.

This is the newly-built Eswatini Football Association’s (EFA) Lubombo Regional Technical Centre at KaLanga, Siteki. This is also the area where former Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and Mbabane Swallows Chairman, the late Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze, was laid to rest two years ago. It is a slightly improved model of the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium in Nhlangano. The latter is also under the EFA FIFA Forward Projects along with the next Technical Centre to be built at Mkhuzweni in the Hhohho region. The KaLanga project has been confirmed complete by the EFA in its Activity Report tabled before affiliates in the recently held local football mother body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Completion

“The trademark infrastructure development implemented at KaLanga in the Lubombo region has now realised completion of the offices and associated facilities,” confirmed EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngometulu in the report. He stated that the ‘impressive facility’ houses several areas, which will soon be ‘under full utilisation by stakeholders’. These include the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) which has the first and second tier leagues under its auspices. The organisation’s Chairman Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula, also EFA Vice President, could not hide his joy at the news of the Centre’s completion. “We had even considered hosting games of one tournament there before the country went into lockdown,” he said.

However, football is currently among the suspended moderate and high risk sports due to COVID-19. The EFA CEO further makes it clear that the only job left was on the artificial turf, which has already been installed but needs touch-ups. The little work left is said to have been halted by COVID-19 but all will be done and dusted next month.
