MBABANE – One of Eswatini’s top cyclists, Mduduzi Zwane, never ceases to train despite the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Dig Deep cyclist is of the view that training should not be done only because one has to prepare for a competition.

He said exercising should be everyone’s lifestyle because it has many positive spin-offs which include keeping fit and a healthy lifestyle. He also highlighted that training also boosts one’s immune system.
The 22-year-old cyclist usually trains indoors and outdoors during this COVID-19 era.

When sweating it out indoors, he is usually doing push-ups, sit-ups, squats or jack-knives among other exercises. When he is training outdoors, he is riding his bicycle for over 30km distance.

When asked how the lockdown had affected them, he said it has affected their training as they cannot ride together as a group or a team.
He said, however, despite that they were training to keep fit and healthy, it used to motivate them to train knowing that they were going to compete in some races.

He pleaded with government to lift the ban on sports.
“Cycling is a non-contact sport as we normally ride on our own. We can avoid sharing water bottles, and ensure that social distancing is observed,” Zwane said. He also said cyclists should be screened and sanitised before the start of the race.

He said, however, the long term solution should be learning to observe government and WHO precautionary measures.
“We must learn to live with the virus. We cannot ban sport forever. All we need are strategies on ensuring that we are safe from the virus,” he said.
