MBABANE – The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are hitting hard on Malanti Chiefs.

This is after a number of players confided in this publication that they have not been paid their monthly salaries since March.
Players, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said things were not easy for them since the 2019/20 season was suspended on March 13.

“We have been struggling since sport activities were banned, we have not been paid here at Malanti. The effects of COVID-19 are hitting hard on us and how we wish football would resume,” said one player.
Another player said it was better when the league was still ongoing because they were paid.

Paid

“Despite that we were not paid fully when the league was still on, I would say half a loaf was better than nothing because somehow we would be reimbursed our balances through the course of the week. They would use the gate-takings money to pay the balances and we would be happy,” said another player.
Another player said there was nothing they could do but to understand the situation.

“This COVID-19 is a curse to humanity. It has affected business; football leagues and almost every economy is down on its knees because of this virus. We have to understand man but I was thinking the FIFA relief money would have helped us,” said one player.

When reached for comment, Malanti Chiefs PRO Lungile Dube confirmed that players were not getting paid.
“There is no money. This COVID-19 has really crippled our economy and the club was not exempted from this scourge. We give our players what we can but truth of the matter is that there is no income since the league was stopped,” said Dube.

When asked if they had received EFA’s Relief Fund of E27 500, Dube said; “I have contacted the director Dumsani Gumede to ask him about the relief fund money. I hear it is already in our bank account but I need to confirm with Gumede,” she said.

When asked if they would consider using that money to pay the players at least slashed salaries, she said; “Our salary budget is E80 000 .We will consider using that money to pay the players. Things are tough during this period but we will try our best to help the players,” she said.

Malanti Chiefs is not the only team that is struggling with salaries. Some teams including Manzini Wanderers, Manzini Sea Birds and Mhlume Peacemakers reportedly cut the players’ salaries during the COVID-19 era.
