MBABANE – Three EmaSwati have confirmed their participation in the Masters Chess Online Challenge.

The tournament will be played on July 19, 2020 on lichess.com at 7:30pm. The time control will be 3+0 under the Swiss System format. The purpose for the tournament is to give international experience to chess players from around Africa as it invites average and master level players from the continent.

Players who have confirmed so far are Candidate Master (CM), Similo Hlophe, Candidate Master, Sikhanyiso Sihlongonyane and Mbongeni Mabuza. Reached for comment, CM Sihlongonyane said this would give them the necessary exposure.

“This tournament will give international exposure and experience to Eswatini players as we look to learn and gain experience from International Masters like IM Providence from Botswana and IM David Silva from Angola, who have already confirmed participation,” said Sihlongonyane.
He also highlighted this tournament would also give them room for good performance as it is online.

“The strength of the tournament is evenly distributed, since we will play against players who have the same ratings as ours and those that are stronger, from which we will learn from. This will help keep Eswatini players active during this lockdown,” he said.

He also noted that the tournament also promoted networking as lichess has a conversation section where players can chat or communicate. He added that players will get to know other international players, and also that they looked forward to the tournament.
