MBABANE –The worst fears have now become reality for local sports.

Like wildfire, news that Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) Business and Development Manager Zama Tsabedze had tested positive for COVID-19 started spreading yesterday afternoon. He became the first local sportsperson to be infected with the virus and as a result, the ERSC’s offices in Mbabane were closedyesterday as a precautionary measure. It has also been gathered that the offices were also fumigated by health officials. Tsabedze, who is currently in self-isolation, confirmed these developments and assured that he was not in panic mode.

“I discovered yesterday (Tuesday) that my COVID-19 results were positive. I am taking it easy at home and hoping to recover soon. People should not panic, I will be okay because I am following the health guidelines as advised,” he said. Further information gathered was that after the council’s offices were closed upon the news that he had tested positive, the 14 employees of the council took separate individual tests before being advised to stay in self-isolation until their results were released.

Surprised

A call was put through to the Council’s Media Officer, Dumisani Ntiwane, who initially sounded surprised that the news was out in the public domain, but could only confirm that the entire staff at their offices had been tested and were currently waiting for their results. “The office will remain closed for now pending the test results. This is a precautionary measure, which is aimed at ensuring that our staff is safe. We will update the public on any other developments. There is no need to press the panic button,” the former Times of Eswatini Sports Editor insisted. When pressed further to comment on the reports of the positive case involving the said official, Ntiwane did not want to commit himself.

Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr Vusi Magagula, was also contacted, but was also coy with information. “Don’t you think it will generate unnecessary stigma on the people who work there? What do you have to report on this? Let them make the necessary announcement to their clients I believe,” was Magagula’s response when quizzed on the issue. Tsabedze is one of the most senior officials at ESRC, having worked there for a number of years already.
