MBABANE – He became eligible for presidency as per the requirements of the WFA constitution.

Eswatini Women Football Association (EWFA) Chairman Sonnyboy Mabuza has come out to clarify that he was rightfully appointed to the position by the executive members.

He said this following the call for female leadership in the women football fraternity as reported in the Times SUNDAY publication.

Mabuza has served for two terms (eight years) and believed that his reinstatement to the position was by no mistake as he was voted for by the WFA executive who believed in him to carry out his duties diligently.

Headed

The WFA headed by Mabuza has two female leaders: Vice President Thula Simelane and former Royal Leopard coach Xolile Dlamini, who is the Treasurer. Mbabane Swallows’ ladies team coach Aaron ‘Katalala’ Mavimbela is the Secretary.
In the article which Mabuza was referring to, radio personality and football fanatic Queen Shongwe was quoted saying the association needed female leadership, including the presidential seat occupied by Mabuza.

In her opinion, she said the entire leadership structure needed to be female-dominated since the players would easily relate to female leaders as opposed to men.

“I did not elect myself to the position. Our constitution states it clearly that for one to be eligible to stand for the elections, he or she should have served for at least four years both in the executive and in the member association.

Oldest

“I have a team, Kappa Ladies and I am the oldest among all team owners in women football,” said Mabuza.
He further argued that all 13 teams competing in the domestic Women Football League (WFL) were run by males and given that they resigned, most of the teams, if not all of them, would be dismantled.

“It is also contained in our constitution that members should not discriminate by gender, colour or religion so if you are picking on Sonnyboy, then we have a case,” said Mabuza.

On another note, the WFL chairman said his mission was solely to develop women football in the country while working together with the executive members.

He advised members who were willing to be elected for chairmanship to wait their turn in the next extraordinary general assembly, which would be announced on a later stage depending on the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic.
