NO SUPPLEMENTS, BUT HEALTHY DIET FOR KAREN

MBABANE – Ironman competitor Karen Hemmingsson prefers a healthy diet over the use of supplements.

The 40-year-old athlete, during the lockdown in the country, has been working hard by training to keep physically fit behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The mother of two has been competing in the Ironman, Comrades Marathon annually held in South Africa.

She said since the lockdown, her training regime had not changed that much besides the fact that she now runs less with her club, Manzini Striders. “Training at home alone is not new for me because I did a lot of that when training for Ironman and have most of the equipment at my disposal. I am disciplined when it comes to my health, which is why I am doing a lot of strength training and cycling. I do these exercises anytime in the week and reserve the weekends for good long runs,” she said. Hemmingsson added that the month of May was her favourite and has since added the squats challenge in her training routine. “I have some workout videos on my Instagram page which I have done to inspire someone out there to get active."

"My diet is also a lifestyle. With winter approaching, I have added my go to mix which I have every evening, made up of hot water, fresh ginger, lemon, cinnamon and honey. That helps to keep the flu away,” she added. “I don’t use supplements but rely on a healthy diet with vegetables and fruits, then drink lots and lots of water. I also eat chicken, fish and use moringa to give my body all the nutrients it needs. Personally, there is no better time than now to make changes. The virus has shown us that we need to be healthy with a good immune system to make it through. Look after yourself and your body will reward you,” she advised. Hemmingsson is a three-time Comrades Marathon finisher and competed in the 2018 Ironman South Africa while also involved in cycling.
