MBABANE – The introduction of teqball in the country is a blessing to Premier League players during the lockdown.

Capital City giants, Mbabane Swallows and Highlanders are the first teams to benefit from the Teqball Eswatini Federation (TEF) as they handed the clubs with two tables to keep the players busy during the lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Teqball is a ball sport that is played over a curved table combining elements of soccer and table tennis. Back and forth, the players hit a soccer ball with any part of the body except arms and hands.

Teqball can be played between two players as a singles game, or between three or four players as a doubles game.

The sport was introduced in the country last year in May and it is now an affiliate of the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) and the world mother body Federation International de Teqball (FITEQ) based in Hungary.

TEF President Mfanafuthi ‘Taribo’ Bhembe said out of the four tables that were in the federation’s possession, they decided to share them with the Premier League clubs for the players who are under lockdown at the clubhouses.

He said each table will be stationed with a particular team for two weeks before being moved to the next team.
He said their next destination for the tables will be the Manzini-based teams including Manzini Wanderers, Denver Sundowns, Moneni Pirates, security forces in Royal Leopard, Young Buffaloes and Green Mamba.

“There are players who are staying in the team clubhouses and we believe that they will greatly benefit by playing the teqball as they will boost their skills, control and do physical training at the same time,” he said.

The first teams players who first tasted the teqball were the Ingwenyama Cup finalists Mbabane Highlanders and Green Mamba as their players used it as part of their warm-up sessions in front of the over 12 000 crowd.

“The teqball will not only benefit the local teams but also international players who are in the country.
“Some of them who had kept themselves busy playing teqball include South Africa’s Mbombela United’s Felix Badenhorst and Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa,” he said.
The teqball is an indoor sport but it can be played on any open flat area.
