MBABANE – They live the word!

That is the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), whose administration has not only discouraged participation by the affiliating associations but took it upon themselves to follow COVID-19 (coronavirus) prevention measures. This shows that ESRC is not only preaching the word of staying safe from the global pandemic but has ensured that they live by the precaution measures and guidelines recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Darius Dhlomo said they were the first entity to ensure their affiliating members adhered to safety precautions after the outbreak of the ailment.

Preaching

“We have always been preaching the gospel of staying safe. As a big step in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, we announced that we banned affiliating members to take part in international games and that was way before the country announced a total shutdown on all sporting activities locally,” said the CEO. He added that they still made emphasis that people should stay home, sanitise and follow all the WHO prevention guidelines. If the health experts’ guidelines are properly followed, the CEO said Eswatini would not find it hard to fight against the virus and it shall soon be eliminated completely. “People should exercise indoors or within their premises. When jogging, it should not be done in groups and athletes must take on shorter distances, about 5km,” he said. The CEO added that the current situation was unusual and made them do unusual things such as being confined indoors the whole day.

Respect

“It is important to stay indoors and I am currently indoors as we speak in respect of the government directive,” said the CEO. Meanwhile, ESRC’s Zama Tsabedze also shared similar sentiments and disclosed that following the outlined precaution measures was very important. On another note, a statement was shared by ESRC on their website on the outbreak of the COVID-19 where the council is said to have taken a very considered decision, which puts the interests and safety of athletes and citizens above all else, to suspend all international travel by their respective recognised sports bodies for various sports-related engagements until the situation with the outbreak is normalised.
