MBABANE – Mbabane gyms are taking extra precautionary measures against the COVID-19 (coronavirus) threat.

This was evident when a visit was made by this publication to some of the gyms within the capital city and surrounding areas.
The threat of the pandemic is so serious that numbers are drastically decreasing as people are mindful of the fact that such places, if proper care is not taken, can pose serious danger.
At the Mbabane Club Gym, a number of prevention measures have been introduced by the gym management in order to provide their clients with a safe fitness centre.

When a visit was paid to the gym yesterday, no client was present for services provided by the gym but only staff members were present.
At the entry point of the fitness room, there are posters stuck on the walls advising clients that they should bring their own towels, failure to do so, the clients are advised to go back as they will not be allowed to use the gym.
Employee of the Mbabane Gym, Nonhlanhla Dlamini said the news of the spread of the coronavirus had frightened a lot of people, their clients inclusive as numbers were dwindling by the day.

“I think people are frightened as numbers have decreased since the news of the outbreak of the virus,” said Dlamini who was in the company of other staff members.
She disclosed that management and staff were taking every possible prevention measure as sanitizers, soaps and other disinfectants as well as equipment were purchased in the fight against the spread of the virus.
“All clients must come with towels, if not, they are not allowed into the gym. This is done because they sweat and spreading the virus through excretion is highly possible,” she said.

Dlamini demonstrated how they used sanitisers now and again to keep their gym equipment clean at all times. She also explained that they had availed the sanitizers near almost every gym equipment for their clients to spray and wipe before and after use.
“In the bathrooms, we have ensured to avail soap at all times and that they stay clean. We also spray the gym equipment even if the clients have sprayed after use,” she said.
Dlamini further highlighted that they would now disconnect the door sensor as clients would have their thumbs scanned for the sensor to detect who they were to allow them entry.

“We now operate the door manually to prevent the spread as a client infected may touch the sensor and have the virus spread through contact,” she said.
The gym employee added that they had tried to create more space in between gym equipment and they were considering outdoor training as per health practitioners’ recommendations.

Meanwhile, a S Motion Gym staff member had to first get consent from management to inspect the gym but conceded that the training centre embrace prevention measures.
They disclosed that management had purchased disinfectants which included sanitisers for use at the gym.
