MBABANE – She is not taking any chances! As the international death toll increases due to the coronavirus outbreak, Eswatini ace golfer Nobuhle Dlamini, who recently returned from the Women’s NSW Open in Australia, says she is taking the necessary precautions to be informed about the virus and how to prevent contracting it in her international tournaments.

Dlamini will be playing in the about E3.8 million-sponsored Investec South Africa’s Women Open starting today until Saturday.
The lucrative tournament will be played at the Westlake Golf Club in South Africa where top international golfers, including Dlamini, will be competing. Apart from playing in the neighbouring country, the Lobamba-born golfer is featuring in Ladies European Tour (LET) events, mainly in Europe and Asia. According to the LET schedule, the next event is the Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by Public Investment Fund in Saudi Arabia.

It is sponsored to the tune of US$1million, which is about E16.1 million, according to yesterday’s currency exchange rate. The tournament will be played at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club starting on March 19 to 22, 2020.

“The virus has affected the whole world and we have seen some tournaments being cancelled in the Men’s Tours. They were to be hosted in the highly affected countries. None of the ladies’ tournaments have been cancelled yet.

“Next week, we are scheduled to compete in Saudi Arabia and we are currently not sure if the event will take place as we would all have to travel via the world’s major airports, which would put us at risk of contracting the deadly virus,” said Dlamini.

She further mentioned that they (golfers) were led by highly qualified experts who were constantly monitoring the situation and would advice them about the magnitude of the virus and other developments. “I personally do take precautions and keep myself informed about the disease as we have all seen that it is deadly,” added Dlamini.

According to the live updates on the virus, there are currently 13 cases of people infected with coronavirus in South African and 21 in Saudi Arabia. The spread of the virus globally has also seen numerous tournaments in various sporting codes being cancelled internationally and in reaction to the this, Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council has banned all of  its athletes from participating in international tournaments.
