MBABANE – Junior golfer Qiniso Mkhonta on Saturday proved to all and sundry that he is in top form. He won the highly-contested MTN Monthly Masters competition hosted by the Mbabane Golf Club.

The 17-year-old Form Five pupil at St Francis High School in Mbabane was the best of the 64 golfers who featured in Saturday’s tournament, which was by all standards the biggest of all golf events seen in the country. The tournament had a record 25 prizes, including novelties. As is normally the case, it attracted players from all corners of the country.

Playing of handicap five, Mkhonta carded an unflappable 71 gross for 42 points from six birdies, seven pars and five bogeys, which was spectacular.
The youngster has conspicuously and consistently been in fine form since last year. About a forthnight ago, he scooped the prestigious Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) Monthly Mug. That particular victory was made sweeter by the fact that he waltzed past some of the local big names to win both the net and gross trophies.

Last December he was crowned the 2019 Junior Champion after accumulating a total of 50 points from the Nomads Eswatini’s sponsored junior tournaments staged throughout the year. He is part of the quartet who will represent Eswatini in the All Africa Junior Golf Championships to be held in Gaza, Egypt between 21 and 27 of next month.

The runner-up in this past weekend’s competition went to another regular podium finisher Robinson Hlophe with 40 points. The third and fourth places went to equally good players in Machawe Maziya and Mandla ‘MA’ Dlamini, who were tied on 38 points and only separated by the countback rule.
appreciation

Mkhonta has expressed great appreciation to his parents for introducing him to golf. His father Andrew is also a golf fanatic.
“Today was a great day, my golf was on point hence I played 1 under par.

I’d like to also thank the Nomads Eswatini, Eswatini Golf Union and the coaches for the tremendous support they have rendered to us as junior players. I wish to also thank all the parents out there who support golf and my fellow junior players. It is a great honour for me to stand up for the juniors,” he said.

Professional golfer Meshack Zwane, who is one of the coaches for the juniors, said they were proud to see the development players conquering on such a big stage. Zwane thanked the parents and sponsors for supporting the juniors’ programme.
