MATSAPHA – He is maintaining his cutting edge in the new decade.

MTN Khemani Cycling Club top cyclist Muzi Shabangu has defended his 38km Individual Time Trial title by cruising to another record win yesterday. The 22-year-old clocked an improved time of 01:00:48 hours to slash the past year’s time by about three minutes at Phocweni in Matsapha. He had clocked 01:03:05 hours in the past year.

Shabangu shook off former teammate Lungelo Mlangeni in the race for the top spot. The latter clocked 01:03:05 hours. Completing the list of podium finishers was an equally forceful Sihle Dlamini from Dig Deep, who clocked 01:05:32 hours.

In an individual time trial, cyclists race alone against time. Muzi was among those who belatedly left the starting point but still had the mental fortitude to race to the top. The cyclists raced along the Phocweni and Nhlambeni road and they had to endure four laps of about 10km each.
The reigning road champion celebrated tightening his grip on his title, expressing hope that he set the tone for another flawless year by winning the first race of 2020.

“I did several pre-races and practised along the route,” Shabangu said.
Dinize Wilsch from EVA Club, on the other hand, also maintained her dominance in the ladies section to clock a golden time of 1:22:37 hours.

The event was coupled with an 18km race. Thembikhosi Khumalo from Inyatsi Cycling Club returned to claim gold again with 00:37:17 hours. About 50 cyclists joined the race while former Deputy Prime Minister Paul Dlamini also grabbed an opportunity to ride along the route to stay fit.
