MBABANE – Young Buffaloes proved their dominance in the MTN Premier League when they swept the boards in the first round awards.

Winning big for the army side was sensational midfielder Sandile ‘Saviola’ Gamedze, who was named the best player and top goalscorer for the first round, with Coach Dominic Kunene announced best Coach and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sandile Gwebu adding to the glamorous achievement by taking home the best spokesperson award carrying E2 500.

The 24-year-old Sandile Gamedze pocketed E20 000 in total in the first round, having been crowned the best player (E8 000) and top goalscorer (E6 000) in the first round and that added to the E6 000 for being the best player in October. Gamedze is the current leading top goalscorer with 17 goals, having matched the record set by Malanti Chiefs in the 2017/ 18 season. He ended the first round with 15 goals.

His super form has seen Buffaloes being the champions elect for E1 Million first prize money at stake, as they lead second positioned Mbabane Swallows with six points with only 11 matches to go.
Gamedze said this was a motivation for him and the team.

Winning

“I was not expecting to be the best player in the first round, as I won one player of the month just like all the other players. I knew about the top goalscorer award. It’s been hard work but this is not the end as there is still a long way to go. Our eyes are on winning the league and we are taking each game as it comes,” he said. Gamedze said they had won almost all the other tournaments in the country being the Ingwenyama Cup and the EswatiniBank Cup, but it was only the MTN Premier League trophy that was remaining.

The army side CEO Sandile Gwebu said the achievement was through a collective effort. He said everyone within the team was working hard and giving their all to achieve what they had so far.
“This will push us to work hard as this is still half-time as there is a long way to go. We are going to do all our best to continue pushing to win more games,” he said.

MTN Eswatini Senior Manager Consumer Marketing Meshack Maseko announced the winners of the first round awards for the current season yesterday, in the company of Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati. He congratulated all the winners and urged other teams to challenge the dominance of Buffaloes. “Young Buffaloes dominated the first round and congratulations to them.

The standard of the competition is high and we saw it towards the end of the first round as about three teams were all in a chance of winning the E350 000 and we believe now it is still not over as the league moves towards the end,” he said. The league continues with week 16 this weekend as there is still a lot to be won end of the season.
Meanwhile, the multiple award-winning Times of Eswatini scooped the ‘Best Print Media’, taking home E5 000.
