SQUASH DEVELOPMENT STALLED

MBABANE – The Eswatini Squash Association is facing a dilemma. The association cannot roll out their regional development programmes as they await official recognition by the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC).

According to the association’s Secretary General, Benedict Bennet, they only operate as a social entity for now.
“We need to be officially affiliated to the sports council.we sent the application last year and we hope they welcome us on board this year during their Annual General Meeting (AGM). I do not know when they will hold the AGM but we are optimistic that we will affiliate this year,” said the secretary.

Impossible

Bennet added that it was next to impossible to be doing anything in as far as regional development was concerned as they only operated on what he called a ‘charity organisation.’
He added that they had been planning even from the past year to have regional development programmes but the fact that they were not recognised by the ESRC was a hindrance.

“We are hoping for recognition in 2020, there are so many development programmes stalled by this predicament.

Plans

We had great plans to roll out the programmes such as introducing squash in most of the country’s ‘schools in the regions,” said Bennet.
The secretary general said the major obstacle, if an association is not affiliated with ESRC, was the issue of finances.

“Most of the things need finances to be successfully carried out. When we approach corporations for financial support, the first question they will ask is whether the association was known and if it was affiliated with the ESRC,” lamented Bennet.

The secretary further highlighted that as an executive; they would wait for recognition by the sports council and then implement their development programmes.
He said the only associations not affiliated to the council who were able to implement the programmes were those that had the financial muscle.
