MBABANE – It seems their recruitment exercise is not a failing programme after all.

That relates to the story of capital city rugby giants Mbabane Cheetahs who started 2020 by recruiting new players ahead of three international tournaments in the next two months. Three weeks ago, the rugby team conducted their first training session of the year in readiness for the international tournaments where they invited interested players to join the team. The main purpose of the exercise is to recruit more lady players for contact rugby, which is the highest level in which the sport can be played in the world. Head Coach Naomi du Pont said they were disrupted by the unfavorable weather conditions in the recruitment process as they skipped a week of training due to heavy rains.

Recruits

“So far we have five recruits, three ladies and two males,” said the coach. Du Pont added that interested players to join the team and the rest of the team members must come for training even if it is raining and exception was only when there are thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Cheetahs will first leave the country on February 21, for a tournament in Hoedspruit, Limpompo Province in South Africa which will be played the next day. The second tournament will be on February 29 in Pongola and the team will leave the previous day while the third tournament will be at Malelane on March 6.

On another note, Du Pont urged schools around the capital city to contact the rugby club to set up development programmes and introduce rugby at their institutions. She said the Eswatini Rugby Union (ERU) is currently training development coaches and they will help in training the children at schools.
