‘BULL’ BUCKLE UP FOR MADLENYA TEST

MBABANE – Ingwenyama Cup last edition runners-up Mbabane Highlanders’ bid to earn a place in a second straight semi-final continues when they host Madlenya.

After passing what can be dubbed their toughest test of the new decade, during the 1-0 win over rivals Mbabane Swallows in the Last 16 in the past week; another tricky assignment awaits. Madlenya may be campaigning in the country’s football second-tier but Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati’s men will be wary, as minnows claim big scalps in this tournament. This is the same Madlenya who eliminated Green Mamba on penalties in the first hurdle of the past edition.

This match-up is the repeat of the December 31, 2016 (second edition) meeting, when Highlanders needed to grind out a 3-2 win to earn a place in the quarter-finals. The two players who scored for the capital city giants in Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze (brace) and Sifiso Zwane will not be in this afternoon’s team after leaving the side. However, Highlanders still have the needed ammunition for the battle and the enterprising Kenneth Moloto, who scored the decisive goal in last week’s derby, would want to prove that his showing was no fluke.

With all the pressure on their opponents, Madlenya, who are fresh from eliminating Malanti with a 2-1 win, also hope to put their best foot forward. Marksman Sethu Ngcamphalala and Melusi Thwala, who scored in the 2016 meeting, return to haunt Highlanders. After eliminating fellow National First Division side Hlatikulu Tycoons and strugglers Malanti in the first two rounds, this is the ultimate test for William Gamedze’s men.

They have already made history by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in five attempts but their insatiable appetite will motivate them to push for the next round.
On paper, Highlanders are favourites but inside the field of play they should buckle up for a feisty and stimulating showdown.
