MBABANE – The much-awaited big derby in the country between  log leaders Mbabane Swallows and Highlanders is set for December 22.

The Mbabane derby will mark the last fixtures of the MTN Premier League first round with the E350 000 incentive still up for grabs between army side Young Buffaloes and Mbabane Swallows. Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati confirmed yesterday and said this weekend, only the pending fixture between Young Buffaloes and Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows will be played.

The game was called off on Saturday at King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium due to a water-logged pitch after heavy rains. Buffaloes, who are now second in the log, were leading with a solitary goal.

Highlanders will be looking for their first win in six meetings against their rivals while Mbabane Swallows look to keep their momentum as they first want to win the E350 000 and the title at the end of the season to go back and play in the CAF Champions League.

Swallows captain Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze said they would not take Highlanders for granted despite the latter’s poor performance of late. He said they would come out strong on derby day and form would not count.

“We are very much aware that it will be a tough game and Highlanders will throw everything at us to win the match and we will do the same. Form counts for nothing in such high-profile games. For us, it is a matter of taking each game as it comes and we will be ready for Highlanders on the day,” he said.
Swallows jumped to the summit of the log with a 2-0 win over Malanti Chiefs at Somhlolo National Stadium on Sunday while Highlanders settled for a 1-all draw against Tambuti on Sunday at Mayaluka Stadium.

This will be the first derby for Swallows Zambian coach Honour Janza and he said he was looking forward to the game. He said he knew little about the game but he had been told that it was one of the biggest in the country.
