LOBAMBA – A Meshack Sifundza second half strike was enough to hand the E75 000 first round incentive to Tambankulu Callies after beating a hard fighting Mbabane Citizens in an MTN National First Division encounter.

Callies finished on top of the log standings with 28 points, outsmarting strong contenders in Madlenya and Tinyosi, who finished on 25 and 24 points respectively.  Tinyosi were held to a 1-all draw by Seven Dreams yesterday while Madlenya beat Illovo 2-0 last Friday. The final whistle provoked scenes of jubilation from the over 50 travelling fans who were joined by the players and technical bench. At some point, Premier League of Eswatini  Chairman Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula and MTN’s Meshack Maseko had to wait while the Lubombo-based side were still in celebration before Maseko handed them the E75 000 replica cheque.

Interestingly, the match winning goal scored by Sifundza was his first goal of the season after being on the sidelines for almost the entire first round. He only played once before he was ruled out due to a knee injury. He tapped in a Mazwi Sihlongonyane cross to beat Citizens goalkeeper Machawe Mamba with a low shot. “This goal was like a highlight of my career after I suffered an injury early in the season. I thought I would never play football again but I am happy that I recovered and bounced back with a bang,” Sifundza said after the game.
Meanwhile, MTN’s Meshack Maseko said they were happy as sponsors as the league was competitive.

“This reminds me of the how the elite league ended last season as more than one team were competing for the title. The first round finished in the same fashion and we want to congratulate Callies. We encourage other teams to up their performance as the league is not over yet,” Maseko said. PLE Chairman Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula echoed Maseko’s words and also encouraged football lovers to fill the stadiums because the league was worth watching. Coming into the game, it was a tightly contested encounter but the home side were left to rue their chances.
