MBABANE – International teams are showing interest in taking part in the inaugural Khan’sicala Rugby Sevens Festival.

Two Mozambican rugby teams have confirmed their participation in the tournament billed for December 21, 2019 at Malkerns Country Club. This was disclosed by one of the tournament organisers, Naomi Du Pont, who is also the coach of Mbabane Cheetahs. The two Mozambican teams are not just the only teams from outside Eswatini that have shown interest in taking part.

The 16-team festival is expected to feature rugby clubs from Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. “Another two teams from Mozambique have called to confirm their participation. This means we now have six teams registered,” she said. Du Pont further highlighted that it was first come, first served for registration and there were no favours. November 30 is the deadline for registration of teams. Meanwhile, the tournament will only be open for males aged 19 and above for the first edition and other categories may be included in next editions as the plan is to grow it and make it an annual event.

On another note, the organising team needs E50 000 for the rugby tournament and a huge chunk of the money, E21 000 to be precise, is budgeted for food. In trying to raise the funds, the organisers have developed an advertising programme where companies are encouraged to buy space for advertising. According to Du Pont, the tournament was an initiative started to address a gap identified in Eswatini rugby compared to other countries. If there is any extra money made from this festival, it will be used to assist the seven rugby clubs in Eswatini with equipment for training.
