LOBAMBA – What a derby the MTN Premier League had last night for the more or less 1 500 crowd!

It was Manzini Wanderers against neighbours Manzini Wanderers who displayed a fast-paced game with flair and of course, good goals with missed chances. It was a dog-eat-dog affair and the spectators enjoyed every moment. Referee Thokozani Dlamini and his assistants also did a good job under pressure from the dominant Wanderers fans.

ahead

Pirates were deservedly ahead in 17 minutes after a ferocious strike by Wanderers former star, Lwazi ‘Shumi’ Mamba, from about 40 metres out. He saw the keeper Sandile Dlamini was a few yards out of his line and let fly a stinger that beat him to the back of the net.

Afterwards, it was more about half chances, possession and quick attacks from end to end but without much work for the goalkeeper. It was in the second half that Wanderers upped the tempo and missed two gilt-edged chances in the opening 10 minutes of the half. Cameroonian enterprising winger Mike Dombo was the unlucky one until striker Mfanufikile ‘Fash’ Ndzimandze came off the bench to level matters in the 59th.

pounced

He pounced onto a neat pass by the experienced Sanele Mkhweli inside the box and made no mistake, beating his teammate last season, Romanus Igidimba.
Pirates had a genuine penalty appeal ignored a few minutes later as Shumi beat his marker in the box but got hacked from behind which had the Pirates grandstand and sympathisers shocked and protesting along with the players.

lucky

Wanderers were lucky to escape with that one while Pirates should have also got at least one red at the back but the referee was lenient.
In the end, it was a share of the spoils for the clubs that would do well with a win as it would take them to position three on seven points.
After the draw, both Pirates and Wanderers have five points  and they are in the top five.
