LOBAMBA – He did it in style. That is Swazi Slojos long-distance runner Sifiso Ngcobo who defied all odds to win his first ever marathon with the fastest time of 2:22:06 hours yesterday during the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) marathon.

The 26-year-old ended the dominance of South Africans as the past two races were won by international athletes. Ngcobo outpaced the over 100 athletes who took part in the 42.2km. He specialises in half marathons and this time he decided to upgrade to a marathon (42.2km).

Last year, he came fifth in the 21.1km race during the fourth edition.
“I was just taking my chances with the marathon and I trained a lot. From the start, I believed I could win the race. My endurance was high and I saved some energy for the last two kilometres. Now I have done it,” he said.

Ngcobo was met with joy by his teammates who waited until the end of the event to celebrate the victory together. He took home the E10 000 first prize money.

Last’s year winner in the fourth edition was South Africa’s Thulane Magagula who finished on 2:24:19 hours. The route has not been changed since the race inception five years ago.

Crossing the line second was South Africa’s Wesley Mitai, who clocked 2:25:21 hours with Jabulani Khoza third on 2:26:52 hours.

Meanwhile, Nedbank Zimbabwe veteran athlete Tabitha Tsatsa easily cruised to victory on her maiden appearance in the race finishing on time of 3:06:14 hours to take home the E10 000. She was followed by Eunice Nhlapho.
