SA’S BONG’NKOSI, MUSAWENKOSI JABULISA MARATHON ‘KINGS’

PIGG’S PEAK – They were invincible on the road. These are the duo of South Africa’s Bong’nkosi Mavuso and Musawenkosi Nsibande who were crowned champions of the inaugural Jabulisa 21km Marathon yesterday at Pigg’s Peak.


The marathon, organised by Jabulisa Foundation, pioneered by that area’s Member of Parliament (MP) who is also the Minister of Agriculture, Jabulani ‘Buy Cash’ Mabuza, staged the marathon divided into three categories.


These were the 21km, 10km and the 5km. Mabuza and Minister of Tinkhundla and Administration David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, who represented Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harris ‘Madze’ Bulunga, took on the 10km challenge.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Bong’nkosi from Nedbank was named the 21km distance challenge after he was first to reach the final crossing mark at 1:21:17 hours.

 


Other the other hand, his home country athlete in Musawenkosi from Jozini Athletics Club in KwaZulu-Natal was crowned the women champion for the same distance after crossing the finish line in 1:49:01 hours.


UEDF’s Sifiso Sibandze, who is the two-time Imbube Marathon winner, was placed second position in the 21km race and recorded 1:22:55 hours. In third position was Michael Ndaba who clocked 1:22:58 hours at finish line.

Musawenkosi’s runner-up was TZD’s Sithembile Nzalo whose time was recorded at 1:49:18 hours after crossing the finish line and was followed by Gugu Mthembu from Correctional in third place with a time of 1:57:33 hours.


The 10km Open in the male category was won by  UEDF’s Sikhumbuzo Sihlongonyane with a time of 0:38:01 hours while the ladies Open was won by Sebenele Shabalala in 0:53:08 hours. For the 10km men juniors challenge, Machawe Matsebula won with a 0:41:21 time record while his female counterpart was disqualified for defrauding.


The youngest participant was 7-year-old Sima Mdluli who joined the juniors in the 5km marathon.
