MBABANE – Green Mamba winger Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo is reportedly close to completing a switch to South Africa’s Absa Premiership newcomers Stellenbosch FC.

The former Eswatini international was undergoing assessment at the reigning South Africa’s National First Division champions for over two weeks. According to impeccable sources close to the player, he has passed trials and negotiations over a deal have begun.

“All that is left is for the two parties (Green Mamba and Stellenbosch) to agree on a transfer fee and other finer details of the deal,” alleged an impeccable source.

Green Mamba CEO Thami Phakathi said they would wait for a progress report from the Cape Town-based outfit before they could make a comment.

“We will wait for them to write to us and if they show interest, we will then discuss terms,” he said.
Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker did not respond to a WhatsApp message sent to his phone even though it appeared to have been read (blue ticks). His phone, was on voicemail mode when called for comment. However, during a recent interview with this publication, he said the former DR Congo side AS Vita forward was doing well in training, but a decision would be taken after the assessment.

“He is currently doing well. We’ll take a decision probably next week after we finish assessing him,” Barker had said about a week ago.
It is not the first time for the former Mbabane City and Royal Leopard winger to be invited by the side for assessment. Before the start of the 2018/19 season, he reportedly passed trials. A deal was not concluded due to unnamed technicalities, but Stellenbosch kept pursuing him.

‘Xavi’, said he was waiting for a response from the coaches, is in a race to become the third Eswatini player to ply his trade in the money-spinning South Africa’s Absa Premiership.

Other players in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) are Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze of Polokwane City and Justice Figuareido, who is attached to Kwazulu-Natal-based Maritzburg United.  The latter has since been loaned out to that country’s football second-tier outfit Mbombela United.
