MBABANE – Rugby is gaining popularity in the kingdom. On Saturday, Malkerns Club was the host of the beginning of the new rugby series for the Eswatini Rugby Union development.

The series was played in different categories including tag rugby for girls, contact rugby for the Under 19 boys and senior clubs.
According to Eswatini Rugby Union Secretary Bonginkosi Dlamini, there was great enthusiasm from all clubs, as they turned up in great numbers with 154 participants on all three categories.

Rivalries

“Participating clubs included the Buffaloes, Elephants, Wolves, Titans, Cheetahs, Jaguars and Eagles. It was a great day of rugby, bringing old rivalries between the Buffaloes and Elephants who displayed quality rugby, with tackles that appeased the crowd, and ries scored in between the clubs,” he said.

The secretary added that it was also interesting to watch girls’  touch rugby between Bhunya Wolves Club and Eagles from Manzini which was a very interesting game. “They played to a draw. The union president would like to thank all participants who made the beginning of the series possible and appeals to the nation for sponsorship for the development of the game of rugby in the Kingdom of Eswatini,” he said.

Dlamini also highlighted that the series debuted a new club developed from the Shiselweni region under the male Juniors category, which he said showed that the sport was gaining momentum on all four corners of the kingdom.
He said the union will ensure that such teams are supported in order to improve the number of players in the Shiselweni region.
“The next games for the series will be on June 29, 2019 at a venue yet to be confirmed and the union would like to extend an invitation to everyone interested in being a part of the sport to join and partake,” he said.
