JAZZ, RAPTORS WIN OPENERS

MBABANE – Basketball senior teams recorded victories on the opening day of the MTN National Basketball League.


Jazz got the better of Titans as they beat them 74-65 in a highly contested match at Mavuso Sports Centre on Sunday. Raptors win 63-60 against Steels while Imbumbe defeated Chase Basketball 62-28 and they were the biggest winners.


There were five games played on Sunday with Manzini Superladies beating Langalam Dunkylaine 87-54 in the Women’s National League.
The Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA) Secretary Noma Mkhombe said the leagues started on a high note and teams showed great commitment and the standard was high.

“We are happy that finally, the league is back in action and the games will be played almost every weekend in the coming weeks as we are already behind schedule. Some games will even be played on Fridays,” he said.
Mkhombe said they were happy that the new teams who joined this season were able to cope during their games. He said a majority of the new team players were pupils but they gave a tough competition,” she said.


The new teams are Usuthu Wolves, Usuthu Beavers and Elangeni Pistons.
Mkhombe said they still face challenges with venues.

She said as things were, they would continue to use the Coronation Park despite that there are challenges like lack of shelter inside the courts,” she added.
The league started ahead of the launch of the sponsorship. This will be the third year since MTN Eswatini partnered with the SNBA sponsoring the national leagues.
