MBABANE – Bring back the money! The Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA) has taken its former Secretary General (SG), Mandla Shongwe, to court.

The association is demanding over E52 000 from Shongwe, which it claimed he allegedly unlawfully withdrew from its bank account held with EswatiniBank. These are allegations contained in court papers and Shongwe is yet to file responding papers.

According to the plaintiff (SNBA), the money which was allegedly withdrawn by the defendant (Shongwe), was to be paid to various recipients owed by the plaintiff but the defendant allegedly did not pay such debtors and as a consequence, the association is in deficit of that amount. The association therefore filed a lawsuit demanding Shongwe to repay the amount of E52 000 at the rate of nine percent interest per annum.

The defendant alleged to have committed the offence around the period of January 2017 and July 2018 while he was still the secretary general of SNBA. The SNBA’s principal place of business is Portion 104, Mahleka Street at Malunge Township in Mbabane.

Demand

In August 28, 2018, the association which is represented by Vusi Thomo, from Sibusiso Shongwe and Associates, served the defendant with a letter of demand, urging him to pay the afore mentioned money plus a collection commission of 10 per cent, which is E5 200. Shongwe failed to make the payment within the stipulated four working days and was later served with a summons issued against him at the High Court of Eswatini.

The SNBA currently has eight male elite teams, six ladies’ teams and seven promotional teams, which makes a total of 21 affiliates. Nomalungelo Mkhombe was on April 7, 2019, elected as the Secretary General following Philile Simelane, who was roped in from vice president into the position after Shongwe’s tenure.
