MBABANE – They are widely used as a mode of transport, but this time they will be in a race, that is the Humber bicycle.

The second edition of the Hamba Bicycle Challenge is billed for Simunye on April 28 where the cyclists owning Humber bicycle will race in a 20km road race. Clifton Koen announced yesterday and said registration is free.

There are prizes at stake for the winners worth E8 000. The champions will take home a lucrative E3 000 with the runner up getting E2 000 and the third finishers will pocket E1 000. Fourth finishers and fifth finisher will get E800 and E500 respectively with the sixth positioned receiving E350 and its E250 for the seventh placed cyclist while E100 is at stake for the eighth finishers.

Simunye Club Manager Thea Litschka-Koen said last year in the first edition, they had about 40 cyclists racing.
“This is such a rewarding event and although we have only hosted it once, we are hoping to start a brand new tradition with this Hamba race. Last year we had about 40 cyclists, most of them from Tambankulu. This time around it will be held on a Sunday (April 28) when most of those employed will be off duty,” she said.

Koen said the rules are simple, bring a Humber bicycle and try and keep up. The cyclists will not stop at racing, but they will also enjoy a hot meal afterwards.
“Every participant will receive a participation medal. RSSC is considering donating a cycling helmet to every participant.

Of course, if any of the other estate managers/corporates/enthusiasts would like to donate a prize or two, our hands are wide open,” she concluded.
The race is sponsored by Simunye Country Club, Puma Energy Lowveld Service Station.
