MBABANE – Horses in the African continent are not allowed to be transported to Europe, America or any other place beyond the continent.

According to the Swaziland Equestrian Federation President Glenda Stephens, horses from the region are not allowed to be transported abroad, particularly in Europe and America where most international equestrian competitions are held. In case there are events held in European countries, the president said the equestrian federation of that particular country would rather make a provision for horses to be used by riders from the continent.

“Due to the African horse sickness, the federation and other African federations are not allowed to transport horses abroad,” she said.

Stephens added that for the first time in the 2020 Olympics to be held in Japan, Tokyo SEF planned on sending riders to participate. However, she highlighted that due to the African horse sickness, the Olympics organising committee would probably make a provision that African countries, including Eswatini staged the games in one of the African countries.

It is important to note that in the equestrian sport, the rider and his or her horse develop a special bond and the horse has to understand the instructions and body movements of the rider as per her or his training.
Wikipedia explain the African Horse sickness (AHS) as a highly infectious and deadly disease caused by African horse sickness virus. It commonly affects horses, mules, and donkeys. It is caused by a virus of the genus Orbivirus belonging to the family Reoviridae. This disease can be caused by any of the nine serotypes of this virus. AHS is not directly contagious, but is known to be spread by insect vectors.
